STAPLECROSS JUMBLE SALE: Despite the gloomy forecast of heavy rain and miserable skies which threatened to spoil the day, this didn’t prevent hoards of enthusiastic people queing up at the Village Hall in Staplecross last Saturday for the ever popular Jumble Sale. For whatever reasons, people just love Jumble Sales and this one proved no exception. Held by the Village Hall Committee to boost the running & maintenance costs of this hall, a very good turn out ensured that the notable sum of £744:50 was able to be added to the coffers of this much loved village hall. There was a superb and huge amount of ‘stuff’, all so very generously donated and together with the ever popular, Tombola, Raffle, and Cake stalls, plus the ‘can’t do without’ refreshments ensured that this was yet another excellent event in the calender year of our village hall. Hilary Ganly, the Chairman of the Village Hall Committee would like to express her grateful thanks, as always, to all those who donated items, who helped set up the hall, who manned the sales tables and stands and served the teas, and those who tidied up at the end, It couldn’t have been such a success without you, so Thank You & Well Done.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: Certainly not letting this inclement weather of ours prevent these members from strutting their stuff as they stride through our countryside, the Rother Ramblers have three (3) more walks planned for us to hopefully enjoy this week. All are in different directions and all are very different walks, but all will no doubt offer delightful scenery and spectacular seasonal beauty to enjoy as you stroll through them. First up, is Walk no: 1 which will take place on Wednesday November 12th. This is an 8 mile circular stroll of Mayfield and all those interested are to meet in the car park (SatNav TN206DD) off South Street, in Mayfield, at 10.0am. walking North almost to Mark Cross. A picnic lunch as always, is suggested and of course, dogs are permitted to enjoy this walk with you. Adrian is the ‘Walk Leader’ on this occasion so please contact him on 01273~514336 for all further details. Walk No: 2 will take place on Saturday November 15th and will be a 6.5 mile circular to the South of Ticehurst. Those who like the sound of this walk should meet in the Pickforde Lane car park in Ticehurst (SatNavTN57BN) at 9.30am. Dogs are again permitted to accompany you and a short refreshment stop midway is planned. The ‘Walk Leader’ is once again Lionel, and you can contact him on 01424~752452 for more information. Last but certainly not least is Walk No: 3 which is much closer to home for our parish.- and shorter too as this is a mere 7 mile circular meander covering Sedlescome to Cripps Corner. Arrangements have been made to meet up, at 10.0am. in the Brede Lane car park in Sedlescombe (SatNavTN330RG) on Sunday November 16th. Once again, your doggy pals may accompany you for this stroll and a pub or picnic lunch is the order of the day on this walk so everybody’s catered for !. MOBILE LIBRARY: That super little service which is still FREE will once more be meandering it’s way around our parish on Thursday November 13th when it makes it’s usual fortnightly visit to our three villages. First it will visit Cripps Corner where it will arrive on the car park of the White Hart Inn between 10.15am. and 10.40am. After serving Sedlescombe it will arrive in Cricketers Field, Staplecross between 11.50am and 12.20pm. The little van will then meander through Brede, Northiam and Bodiam to make it’s final stop of the day which will be at Ewhurst Green between 3.40pm and 4.10pm. Please do make use of this vital service which does so much to help keep our community in touch with the many important services available to them. As I’ve said before, ‘It’s about more than just books’

EWHURST PARISH COUNCIL: The usual monthly meeting of the Ewhurst Parish Council will be taking place on Thursday November 13th at 7pm, at the Church room of St. Mark’s Church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. As always, this meeting is open to the public and press alike and gives all residents of the parish the perfect opportunity to come along and have your say. Together with your own Parish Councillors, there is normally representatives from the Police, in the form of our PCSO, Rother District Council, - Mr. Tony Ganly and East Sussex County Council - Mrs. Angharad Davies. You’ll be able to question, query, complain or just comment on any or all things going on within this parish of which you may be concerned with. We are here to listen to you, and to take note, as we are all working on your behalf to make our community a better, safer and happier place in which to live, work and play in. Look for the big banner outside and there’s usually adequate parking. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION: Every year this glorious nation of ours helps the work of the Legion through it’s support of the Poppy Appeal. For this nationwide event of reflection and Remembrance, millions of poppies, wreaths and petals are produced to raise money to help our brave heroes. The Royal British Legion has committed up to £50 million over ten years to support the Defence Recovery Capability programme for wounded, injured and sick Armed Forces men and women and is a M.O.D. led initiative, designed to deliver co-ordinated support for these special service personnel. It’s delivered in partnership with ‘Help for Heroes’ and the Royal British Legion and is supported by other Service charities and organisations. As everyone knows, World War One caused widespread devastation throughout Europe but through the devastation and destruction the humble poppy struggled, grew and flowered. Ltd.Col. John McCrae, a surgeon with the Canadian Armed Forces was inspired by this flower and wrote the unforgettable poem “In Flanders Field”. Sadly he died in a military hospital but his poem, showing people what conditions on the battlefield were like, was published in ‘Punch’ magazine.- On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, - the guns fell silent - the war was finally over. Millions had died and millions had been injured and scarred by the experience, needing practical support when they got home. People wanted to remember those who had given their lives for the freedom we enjoy and often take for granted. An American Professor, Moina Michael, saw the poem and sold poppies to raise money for ex-Service people. And so the tradition began - all these years later, the poppy still stands for Remembrance. A friend sent me this poem recently, - “ It’s the Military, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press, - it’s the Military, not the poet who has given us the freedom of speech, - it’s the Military, not the politicians that ensures our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and it’s the Military who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag and whose coffins are draped by the flag”. If you care to offer the smallest token of recognition and appreciation for all those who served and those who are serving still in any of our military and in whatever capacity, please buy a poppy or other item from those kind and generous people who are currently collecting on their behalf in your area. Please don’t ignore a knock on the door or a ring of your doorbell, or walk on by when passed in the street. Just a few coins, - your spare change, when added with others can make a real difference to those in need. These collecters are out in all weathers for hours at a time for the benefit of others, so please stop for a moment and think of all those service men and women, past and present who have given the ultimate sacrifice that we may be free to please ourselves.

CHURCH SERVICES: REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: Special Remembrance Services will be held at all three churches throughout the parish on Sunday November 9th. The first of these services will commence at the church of St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green at 9.30am. and will be followed by an additional Remembrance Service at St. Giles church, Bodiam at 11.15am. The third Remembrance Service will be at 3pm. at St. Mark’s church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. All three services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and as always, if there is any church matter that he can help you with, please don’t hesitate to ask.
