Out and about: I‘m beginning this week’s column with a few requested reminders of what’s also happening around our area, before commencing with the activities within our own community.

W.E.A.COURSES: These classes are put on by a voluntary committee and are for the benefit of all residents of all villages and towns within this area. It’s that time of year when people are starting to think of either learning a new skill or discovering a new passion or past-time. Although some of these classes have already begun ( from 6th.October) it appears that people can join a class later. Subjects to tempt you with so far are: “ The Houses & Work places of ordinary people 1300~1750 “. The tutor is David Martin.;- “Practical Gardening”, the tutor is Jackie White.;- “Exploration of Philosophy” The tutor is David Derrington.;- “China” from it’s past to it’s present.” the tutor is Karen Chang.;- Plus long standing “Lively Debate of all the issues of the day.” the tutor is David Alfred.;- This Autumn Term has 4 weekly & 1 monthly classes. Courses are quoted as £84:00 but there are concessions for some. Most of these take place at St. Mary’s Centre, Lion Street, Rye. BACK FOR BATTLE: The Battle for Hastings re-enactment is returning to 1066 Battle of Hastings & Battlefield at Battle Abbey. Held over this coming weekend October 11th & 12th it will be the largest single period event in the English Heritage’s programme. It will bring 100’s of Norman & Saxon re-enactors together to give visitors a vivid experience of one of the most definitive battles in England’s history. Alongside the battle there will be the chance to get up close & personal to the knights, soldiers, horses, and all the accompaniment attached. meet the weaponry and chain mail makers, and watch them as they ply their trade and marvel at the medieval falconry, watch the skills involved and have-a-go at the archery. AUTUMN STAR SEARCH: Everyone agrees that there’s something magical and mysterious about the night sky. Not many of us can quickly and easily identify the stars and constellations, when we see them, but that could soon be changing for us, as The Observatory Science Centre at Herstmonceux are running a 4 week evening course from Thursday October 16th 7.30pm to 9.30pm. You’ll be shown how to recognise the constellations and navigate your way around the night sky. A truly fascinating subject for everyone. STAPLECROSS BOWLS CLUB: Last minute reminder that tomorrow Saturday October 11th. the Staplecross Bowls Club will be holding a Huge Jumble Sale which will take place in the Village Hall in Staplecross. Doors will open at 2pm. to allow all those looking for great bargains to seek & find. Naturally there’ll be teas & coffees to sustain you in your search. This is an important fund-raiser for this busy and friendly bowls club so to help them along, bring big bags for your bargains and lots of change to help fill their coffers. If you have any jumble to donate, please bring it to the Village Hall from 9.30am onwards, If you are unable to deliver it yourself, please contact Evelyn on: 01580~83107 or at [email protected] who may be able to arrange for it’s collection.

ROTHER RAMBLERS: This changeable weather of our never seems to deter those intrepid travellers and with two more walks arranged for this week just goes to proves their point of enjoying walking in all weathers. The first walk is planned for Sunday October 12th and is a 6.5 miles circular from Sissinghurst. Those taking part will be meeting in the Sissinghurst Castle car park (SatNav TN172AW) at 11.0am. Sorry but car parking chages will apply for those who are not N.T. members. A picnic lunch is suggested and your doggy pals are permitted to accompany you on this little stroll. Lionel is the ‘Walk Leader’ so please contact him on: 01424~752452 for further details. Walk No:2 is a bit closer to home being a 6 mile circular tour around Westfield. Glorious scenery at any time of the year. This walk will take place on Thursday October 16th and those interested in joining in for this, should meet up at The Moor, (SatNav TN354QP) in Westfield at 10.0am. Please show consideration for the residents when parking. There will be a short refreshment stop with the added option of a pub lunch after returning from the walk. - Always a good idea ! MOBILE LIBRARY: This wonderful little service, brought to us by a lovely little van and helpful staff, - and kitted out with all sorts of delightful items and ideas for our pleasure and knowledge,- will once more be making it’s way to a stop near you on Thursday October 16th. Arriving first at the car park of The White Hart Inn, at Cripps Corner between 10.15am and 10.40am it will, after next visiting Sedlescombe village, arrive at Cricketers Field, Staplecross between 11.50am and 12.20pm. Then after meandering through Brede, Northiam and Bodiam, it will make it’s last stop of the day at Ewhurst Green between 3.40pm and 4.10pm. This is an amazing little service which offers an amazing list of facilities, just walk up those steps and discover for yourself.

EWHURST, STAPLECROSS & BODIAM GARDEN SOCIETY; Fully recovered from their popular Flower, Fruit & Vegetable Show of recent weeks this very friendly, very helpful and very knowledgeable horticultural society will be back to their normal monthly social meetings. On Thursday October 16th, the members will all be meeting in the Village Hall at Staplecross at 7.30pm where they will be entertained by their Guest Speaker for this month, Mrs Nuala Hancock who will talking about “Designing with Plants”. - a very popular subject with those who have the ‘green fingered’ touch, - and even for those who don’t !. There will be an extra enticement to attend on this date as an “Apple Dessert Competition” is planned for this Autumnal meeting.---Nothing so intense as the ‘Saturday Morning Kitchen’ or the ‘Mary Berry Bakes’ Cooking programmes, but just as delightful and fun, as well as being delicious to try. The ‘Rules’ are plain and straightforward, -It is just any Dessert with Apple as the main ingredient. How simple is that !. CHURCH SERVICES: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green at 9.30am on Sunday October 12th Trinity 17. This service will include Holy Communion (BCP). There will be NO SERVICE at the church of St. Giles, Bodiam, but a Morning Praise service will commence at 11.15am. at St. Mark’s Church, Northiam Road, Staplecross. As usual, both of these services will be conducted by Reverend Gordon Winchester and if there are any church matters on which he can offer any further assistance, in any capacity, he’ll be very glad to be of any help to you all.
