Staplecross Luncheon Club: Although many social groups or societies have sojourned for the summer, this super little dining social group have not. As per normal, the group will be meeting at the Village Hall on Wednesday August 20th at 12.30pm for yet another delicious and always enjoyable lunch. This month the menu to tempt our palate will be Roast Gammon, new potatoes and fresh seasonal vegetables, followed by Summer Pudding and cream. Just right for this time of the year!. The food, as usual, will be freshly prepared and beautifully cooked by our own resident ‘superchef’- June and most ably assisted by a loyal team of helpers whose smiling faces and help and kindness certainly make this such an enjoyable place to be.The ‘rules’ of this popular and very friendly dining group are few and easy. There is no entrance fee, ~ you simply pay a meagre sum of £5:50 for this yummy two course lunch followed by tea or coffee, ~ you must be of ‘a certain age’ ~ which is over 50 years ~ and agree to attend each month, whenever possible. This is to make the catering service easier and to minimise waste. For the Luncheon Club to continue to flourish and provide a service to the community in the future, however, they still need our support and custom. They are always ready to welcome new members and with such a wide variety of quality meals served at a reasonable price, you’ll always leave with a smile on your face, a full tummy and a feeling of comfort.- and no washing up to do!. Rother Ramblers: Those cheerful fellows of the rural footpaths, the Rother Ramblers have planned two more delightful walks for our enjoyment this week. The first, entitled ‘Inland Wander’ is organised for Wednesday August 20th and is a mere 6 mile stroll, just right for a mid-week activity. Those interested will be meeting at Cooden Beach Railway Station (SatNav TN394BW) at 10.30am. Park cars in The Gorses, almost opposite the railway station. A short refreshment stop is planned and naturally, your dog may walk with you. Janet is the ‘Walk Leader’ for this trip, so please contact her on 01424~420570 for more information. To finish off the week nicely, how about a delightful circular stroll of just 7 miles around the lovely area of Sedlescombe.This walk is planned for Sunday August 24th and all those who would like to join in on this stroll should meet with other fellow walkers in the car park in Brede Lane, Sedlescombe (SatNav TN330PW) at 10am. As usual, a picnic lunch is the order of the day, and of course, a walk without mans best friend by your side is not a proper walk at all, I’m told, -, so please bring them along to enjoy it with you. Staplecross Bowls Club: With the summer holiday period now in full swing, life within the community of Ewhurst parish may seem to some, to run at a much slower pace than usual, well, that’s not so, for the members of the Staplecross Bowls Club as there appears to be no let up in their busy schedule of fixtures for both home and away. This week the Club have three (3) matches to play and the first is an away game against Cross in Hand and will be played on Wednesday August 20th. After a brief respite, the team are to be found back at their home ground, at Northiam Road, Staplecross gearing up for their home matches, the first of which will take place on Saturday August 23rd. Their opponents on this occasion are the Visually Handicapped. The second and last match for this week will take place on Sunday August 24th. This is another home game and this time the teams are pitting their skills against Tenterden. This sport is lovely to watch,and so much a part of England’s rich heritage so if you are passing, or in the vicinity for a while, why not pop along and enjoy watching the players show off their skills, or support your teams or perhaps consider becoming a part of this lively and friendly club. Mobile Library: Yes, - Once again, that wonderful little service, so important to many residents of our rural community, will be wending it’s way around our parish delivering much more than just books. Arriving on Thursday August 21st. at Cripps Corner, in the car park of the White Hart Inn between 10.15am and 10.40am. The van, after travelling through Sedlescombe, will arrive in Staplecross, at Cricketers Field, between 11.50am and 12.20pm. After serving the community there, the Mobile Library van will trundle through Brede, Northiam and Bodiam to arrive at it’s final destination of the day at Ewhurst Green between 3.40pm and 4.10pm. Do please continue to make full use of all the facilities that are on offer and that this wonderful service provides. As I’ve said many times before, the Library Service, and that includes our super little Mobile Library Van, is not just about borrowing books! - Find out for yourself what is available to you within those doors, ---you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Out & About: Most of us love going to the theatre so why not consider this production as an alternative venue for a good night out for all the family !. On Friday August 22nd. Scotney Castle, near Lamberhurst and owned by The National Trust organisation, is hosting an open air, mad-cap theatrical production which promises to show you history as you’ve never seen it before. Set in the glorious gardens of this beautifully restored castle, this is Mud, Blood and Stiff Upper Lips with a hilarious difference !. Join the critically acclaimed “Pantaloons Theatre Company” for a breathless race through the centuries in this delighfully inventive open-air show. Harold 2nd and William the Conqueror don’t see eye to eye,- Henry 8th decides that 5 marriages just isn’t enough and Queen Victoria is most certainly not amused. As this production is outside, wrap up warm as the nights can get chilly. Pack a picnic fit for a Monarch. Low backed chairs only are permitted- strictly NO gazebo’s and assistance dogs only will be allowed entry. Church services: Church services for the parish of Ewhurst will commence at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green on Sunday August 24th.Trinity 10 with a service at 9.30am which will include Holy Communion (BCP) There will be no service today at St. Giles church, Bodiam, but a Holy Communion service (BCP) at 11.15am.will take place at St. Marks church, Northiam Road, Staplecross.
