Just for a change, but also, I’m sure, for a really good reason, the Ewhurst,Staplecross & Bodiam Garden Society will be holding their May monthly meeting on a Friday, instead of a Thursday. Taking place this evening, that’s TONIGHT Friday May 23rd at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, Northiam Road, Staplecross. The club’s normal business matters, no doubt, will be quickly dealt with, to enable the members and their guests, to enjoy listening to this months guest speaker. Mr. Ian Currie who will be enthralling us all with his talk, entitled “Weather Lore”. Perhaps he may be able to throw some light on why our weather is behaving like it is, and what we can expect in the future? Or perhaps it may be because we haven’t been sowing our seeds or pruning our plants, as our Grandparents taught us. Who knows,? Why not come along and find out? This invitation naturally, is extended to any visitors to this beautiful parish, as well as perhaps any new residents who have recently settled down within our parish, or indeed, any other potential new member who has an interest in anything horticultural and may not be aware of this wonderful, small but super gardening society. The Staplecross Bowls Club have hardly had time to breathe it would appear as they rack up more and more matches as the season gets into it’s stride. Beginning on Monday May 26th (Bank Holiday) they are at home with a 2.30pm start against their opponents from Hellingly. Wednesday May 28th sees them with a 2pm away match against Hastings. Thursday May 29th again finds them also away, but this time they play Hollington. They close the week (and the month) on Saturday May 31st. with yet another away match,with their rivals on this day being Guestling. All these matches commence at 2.30pm unless stated diferently. For a fixture with a diference why not pop along and support our local club, at their home ground/clubhouse in Northiam Road, Staplecross on Sunday June 1st as this lively sports club with a social outlook are the hosts for the day and are holding an ‘Open Triples’ event. A large group of sixteen (16) teams will be playing all day. Visitors will be warmly welcomed and light refreshments will be available throughout the day. What a lovely way to spend some time outdoors ! Also hoping to continue to enjoy the great outdoors, whilst making the most of this glorious and ever changing weather of ours, are those enthusiastic members of the Rother Ramblers. Two equally lovely but quite diferent walks are arranged for our delight with the first commencing on Wednesday May 28th where a 7 mile Icklesham circular tour is planned. The group and all those interested will be meeting at 10.0am at the intersection of the A259 and Broad Street, in Icklesham. There is on-street parking and a short refreshment stop is planned with the option of a pub lunch after the walk. As your doggy pal may accompany you on this stroll, what could be nicer than that? Please ring the ‘Walk Leaders’ Julia and Con for any more information on 01424~437928. Last but certainly not least is our second planned walk which is a 9 mile Winchelsea to Udimore circular stroll. This has been arranged for Sunday June 1st and all interested parties are to meet at Winchelsea Railway Station at 10.0am.Naturally your dog may walk with you and enjoy the company and surroundings also. The ‘Walk Leaders’ Rita and Clive are the ones who are organising this event, so please contact them on 01424~882674 for all further details. As with all walks, please make yourself known, as it’s so much nicer to chat to a new fellow walker and to welcome them to the group when you know their name. It’s a great way to make new friends as well, so look out for any walks that may interest you, join in and have a ramble yourself.

A couple of Dates for your Diaries:

Tuesday June 3rd is the monthly meeting of the Staplecross & Ewhurst Green W.I. Meeting at St Marks Church Room, Northiam Road, Staplecross at 2.30pm the speaker for this month is Mr. John Carnell and he’ll be talking about traditional Trug making, ~ a real country craft item, sadly becoming lost amongst the more modern items of gardening equipment. The W.I. do so much more and IS so much more than just Jam and Jerusalem. ~~but you have to be a member to enjoy it all. Saturday June 7th is the date that the Herdman Association have arranged for a super fund-raising event at the Arthur Herdman Pavilion, in Ewhurst Green.TN32 5TB. Taking place in the brand new, bang-up-to-date Sports Pavilion will be a “Cash in the Attic event. One and all are very welcome to come & look, and hopefully part with some much needed cash, as there is sure to be something that catches your eye ! But if you want to do more than look and buy, and would rather take part in this event yourself, then to hire a table, please contact Glenys at http://www.glenysgriffiths.com/ This could be a “right little earner” as the familiar saying goes, and it’s all in a good cause and everyone’s happy. There will be light refreshments, with ice creams, (just the job in this higgledy piggledy weather) and possibly cream teas as well. What a novelty way to spend a few hours, so come along and join in.

Church services for the parish of Ewhurst commence on Sunday May 25th.Easter 5. with a 9.30am service at St. James the Great, Ewhurst Green which includes Holy Communion (BCP). There will be NO SERVICE at St. Giles, Bodiam on this day. A service at St. Mark’s Church will follow at 11.15 am and will include Holy Communion. Both services will be conducted by the Reverend Gordon Winchester and if he can help you in any church matter, he’ll only be too pleased to do so. This week-end sees the second Bank Holiday arrive, and how we love our extra “day off”. Whatever you have planned for this special day, I hope it all goes well for you. If you are outside, may the sun shine for you and if you’re indoors I hope you find pleasure in all that you do. Me...? ~ I shall be standing on the side-lines at Crystal Palace, this week-end, watching Hubby hurtle around the race track at a ridulous speed, like a thing possessed. chasing the checkered flag with a smile on his face from ear to ear ! ~ Boys and their toys ~ whatever happened to Dinky cars ??. God bless those who invented the Kindle !!!. Have a really great weekend.
