Star on the seafront this weekend

A Star Wars storm trooper will bring some military precision to this weekend's switch-on of the Bognor Regis seafront lights.

The sci-fi star will be joined by local dignitaries for the occasion at 9pm on Saturday, April 4. The ceremony to bring the illuminations to coloured life will take place outside the Royal Hotel on The Esplanade.

It will be preceded by entertainment such as a performance by the Regis Troopers dancers.

A firework display from the pier will follow the switch-on and a fire juggler will be on hand to amuse youngsters.

Coles Amusements will stage a funfair on the beach the other side of the pier all weekend.

The weekend is being organised by Bognor Regis Seafront Lights and sponsored by Bognor Regis Town Council, the Bognor Regis Observer and supported by Arun District Council.

The switch on will see the 100-plus displays between West Park and Hotham Park shining between 7.45pm and 11.45pm each night until September.

New for this year are five low-energy displays along the eastern promenade.

The low-voltage LED multi-coloured bulbs in the shape of umbrella stands will replace the remaining kite-shaped displays.

It costs the volunteers of the seafront lights group nearly 30,000 to keep the illuminations as an attraction each summer.

Bognor Town Council contributes 12,150 and the rest has to be found from fundraising events and donations.
