Star students praised at awards ceremony

Glebelands School celebrated the achievements of its Year 11 leavers at its annual presentation evening.

The celebration, on Thursday (November 17), saw every student presented with their GCSE certificates and awarded prizes for service to the school and community as well as for each subject area. Nineteen youngsters from the school in Cranleigh received additional prizes for gaining eight or more A/A* grades in their GCSEs.Headteacher Anne Hutchinson said the school was celebrating their best ever GCSE results.Wishing the students every success in the future, she added: "This year group will be remembered for their overall contribution to the school community and how they became tremendous role models for the younger students.”Thanks were also given to the parents and teachers who had supported students throughout their time at Glebelands. Guest speaker, Cranleigh Baptist Minister The Rev David Burt spoke to the students about their achievements and the challenges they faced as they headed out into the adult world.A school spokesman said: "His powerful message was one of encouragement and optimism for the very bright future that lies ahead for every member of the Class of 2016."Donations for the prizes came from The Rotary Club of Cranleigh, David Mann and Sons Ltd, Cranleigh Freight Services, The Cranleigh and District Lions, One Forty and Cranleigh Parish Council.The evening ended with a collection for The British Red Cross, which raised more than £170.The spokesman said: "The evening was followed by refreshments and an opportunity for students and staff to catch up on the last few months. This was the last time that the year group would meet together as a whole and it was a wonderful evening of celebration."
