Steam giants grab the limelight

People are able to see the beautifully restored working engines in action when Brede Steam Engine Society holds a free open day on the first Saturday of the month and additional open days on the bank holiday Mondays.

The engines were once used to draw up water from deep wells beneath the valley floor, which was used to supply the Hastings area.

The site, which nestles in the Brede Valley, also contains a remnant from the Cold War in the form of a nuclear bunker set into the hill-side, which is also open to the public.

The open days run from 10am - 4pm. Refreshments are available and there is ample free parking.

Brede Waterworks is signposted from the A28 by the church at the top of Brede Hill.
