Steam locomotives set to visit museum

Amberley Museum is set to host its annual Railway Gala Weekend

The event, which will be held on July 9 and 10, will offer visitors a unique opportunity to see two guest steam locomotives.

‘Susan’ and ‘Jenny’ are German built engines from the Richmond Light Railway in Kent.

‘Susan’ is an Orenstein & Koppel 0-4-0WT, No. 3136, and was built in 1908. After a somewhat nomadic existence, 3136 was taken to the RLR and first steamed there in 2013.

‘Jenny’ is a Jung 0-4-0WT built by Arn Jung in 1921. Originally working in Argentina, it was bought by the owner of the RLR, Jeremy Martin, in 2005.

Operation of the museum’s own collection of steam and diesel locomotives will add to the atmosphere.

The model railway exhibition will include 12 model railway layouts, several society stands and traders, as well as modelling demonstrations.

On each day of the gala, a former signalman who worked at the main line Amberley station box will be giving a presentation on his experiences there during the days of steam. Visitors can look at progress on the installation of the Billingshurst Box.

Amberley Museum is a 36 acre site set in the Souths Downs National Park dedicated to industrial heritage, with communications and electricity exhibition halls, working printshop, stationary engines, lime kilns and more.

Visitors can take free rides on the narrow gauge railway and historic bus.

The museum is home to a variety of traditional craftspeople, such as the wheelwrights and potters, with a cafe, gift shop and nature trails.
