Stepping Out

Trying to picture what a holiday in Bexhill was like in 1907 was the theme for Bexhill Museums' 'Stepping Out' walk recently.

Some people truly got into the spirit of the event and wore Edwardian dress.

The walk took the 20 or so stroller's, including new town Mayor Cllr Paul Lendon, along the sea-front to Egerton Park, returning back to the old bathing station kiosk for refreshments.

Museum guided walks organiser Heather Morrey - a fountain of knowledge when talking about the history of Bexhill - said that in Edwardian times it was: "a very smart resort and a swinging place."

There was no shortage of things to do including: hydro spas; bowls and croquet; bandstands; summer theatres; boat trips; and a golf course.

And Bexhill was the first place in the country that allowed mixed bathing!

Heather said that the walks are very popular: "We make them interesting by talking about local history."
