Stepping Out walks

CHILDREN taking part in the latest of Bexhill Museum's series of Stepping Out walks were given a challenge on Wednesday.

Or rather High Woods Preservation Society president Alan Malpass gave them one challenge and the weather gave them another.

Stepping Out In The High Woods was designed to give schoolchildren an insight into the ecology of the 87-acre beauty spot, which is maintained by the charity under a management agreement with Rother as a wildlife habitat with free public access.

Alan Malpass had cards to hand out to the children on Wednesday morning. Their challenge was to fill them with objects of interest.

"It could be a flower petal, a leaf, a seed - anything," he explained.

Alan Malpass's guided woodland walks have long been a popular feature with the public. He combines a deep knowledge of the woods and of natural history with a sense of humour.

But Wednesday's walk party had only just begun to hear about the first feature of the tour - a hole in a dead pine created this season by nesting Great Spotted Woodpeckers - when the rain began in earnest.
