Steyning museum celebrates silver jubilee

STEYNING Museum is celebrating its silver jubilee with a display of unusual objects.

The museum, in Penfold Street, Steyning, launched the 25th-anniversary exhibition at a party on Friday, November 28.

Tales of the Unexpected features donations and exhibits from each year of the museum's existence.

"It's marking the passage of time during the life of the museum," said museum curator Chris Tod.

Waterloo

Mr Tod said sometimes he doesn't know what the items are or why they were created including a heritage tea towel from the Battle of Waterloo.

"There's also a printing plate used by Steyning New Bank in 1798 to produce twopence bank notes '“ even then, they wouldn't have been a lot of money," he said.

The anniversary celebrations have also launched a book '“ History of the Museum.

Detailing the work of the museum since its conception, History of the Museum was edited by the chair of the museum trust committee, Sarah Leigh.

Harry Ford

Steyning Museum was opened in 1983 by the late Harry Ford.

Since then, it has been run entirely by volunteers and funded by charitable donations and grants.

The original premises were a basement under 93 High Street.

Steyning Museum is open from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm (4pm, October to April) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, plus Sunday afternoons and bank holiday Mondays.
