Steyning sewer work latest

A FOOTPATH is to be closed while essential work to sewage pipes is completed.

Southern Water is carrying out work to the sewerage system along the walkway between Abbey Road and Church Mead, Steyning.

From Monday, the path from Vicarage Lane, next to St Andrew's Church, to Church Mead will be closed until April.

Workmen are already on-site preparing for the major stage of the works, which should reduce the risk of flooding to nearby homes.

Speaking at Monday's parish council meeting, highways committee member Malcolm Clark said workmen were being extremely helpful.

"They sweep the road every hour or so and they are being very conscientious. I think they are doing a super job," he added.

Work could be completed ahead of schedule, as Steyning's county councillor, Derek Deedman, explained. He said: "There was some discussion about the length of time the footpath would be closed. There was some concern about the trench affecting tree roots, so they were going to hand-dig."

Mr Deedman added workmen were looking into the possibility of using a mechanical digger for some of the work. "If they can, the path will be shut for a shorter period," he said.

A Southern Water spokesman apologised for any inconvenience caused by the works. They would be completed as soon as possible.
