Still no progress on Information Centre

THE controversial issue of Bexhill's missing Tourist Information Centre rumbles on.

Town Forum chairman Ken Hutchinson told members he had set up a meeting with the De La Warr Pavilion Trust, Bexhill Chamber of Commerce and Tourism and hoteliers to try to reach a solution over Bexhill's lack of a TIC.

The town has been without the service since the closure of the Marina site after the reduction in the grant to 30,000.

Rother District Council contests the money is better spent on internet technology.

Instead, Bexhill enquiries are being handled at Battle, a situation many consider to be unsatisfactory.

Members at the meeting, oraganised at the request of the Forum, included pavilion director Alan Haydon and chamber president David Getty.

Mr Hutchinson said the De La Warr Pavilion already provided some information but would not commit to providing a full TIC service.

"The Chamber of Commerce did not have the resources to engage in more other than books or leaflets and had little response in its appeal for schemes in the paper."

He said hoteliers lacks a central point for displaying information on accommodation and attractions.

Mr Hutchinson said: "All three groups believe there was a need for positive council participation. It was mentioned English Heritage had helped considerably with Battle TIC.

"There is a stalemate at the moment but we haven't shut the door."
