Still time to sign up for Littlehampton Sport Relief Mile

HUNDREDS of runners and walkers will be lining up for the Littlehampton Sport Relief Mile on Sunday (March 25).

More than 500 people have registered for the seafront fun run so far, but organiser Andy McTaggart says anyone who would like to take part can sign up on the morning of the event, and there is still time to do so online.

He hopes the final total will be approaching the 1,000 capacity for the one mile, three miles and six miles distances, setting off respectively at noon, 11.30am and 11am.

Among them will be Littlehampton Carnival mascot Hampton Hedgehog and Carnival Queen Kirsty Alderton, while carnival committee members will be helping out as marshals on the one-mile circuit starting at the Harbour Park amusement complex, in Arun Parade, continuing along The Promenade, then down Norfolk Road and along South Terrace, back to Harbour Park, which is sponsoring the event.

Champion collector Tyndall Jones will be shaking his bucket to accept donations from spectators and Keith Croft will be providing the commentary.

Inspire Leisure will be organising warm-ups and fun routines for all runners and spectators and will also be providing rowing machines to enable people to have a go at rowing the mile, for those who prefer to cover the distance sitting down.

Harbour Park’s mascot Sandy Castle will be welcoming and entertaining the youngsters, and the amusement centre will have a limited number of rides open on the day. Andy thanks St John Ambulance for providing qualified first-aiders, and Littlehampton Town Council for supplying, delivering and setting up a sound system and safety barriers.

He added: “If you haven’t yet registered, come along on the day for a bit of fun and a walk, hop, skip and maybe even a run, or whatever takes your fancy.”

This will be the third Sport Relief Mile Andy has organised. The first, in 2008, attracted 140 participants, the 2010 event was restricted to 500 runners and sold out two weeks in advance, raising £12,000 for Sport Relief’s work to combat poverty in the UK and in some of the poorest countries in the world.
