Storm drives diver’s Littlehampton leap backwards

DANGEROUS conditions in the River Arun forced organisers to postpone the annual Littlehampton Leap on Sunday (January 5).

Members of the Arun Divers, who have been responsible for arranging the charity fundraiser at the red pedestrian bridge over the river since 1981, took the decision to cancel Sunday’s event following recent stormy weather and turbulent tides over the past few weeks.

The word was spread over Facebook. And although the sky above was clear on the day and the sun was beaming brightly, organisers feared there could be unseen dangers and debris floating under the water.

Terry Monnery, of Arun Divers, said: “The main concern, because obviously the weather was clear enough to jump, was the debris floating under the water that we couldn’t actually see.

“We didn’t want people jumping from the bridge into the water and injuring themselves on floating objects.”

This was only the second time the jump had been postponed, Terry said.

It has now been rearranged to take place on Sunday, January 19. Registration is from noon, with jumpers leaping from 12.30pm.

People are, as always, encouraged to take the plunge wearing fancy dress.

The chosen good cause being supported this year is the Littlehampton Sea Cadets.
