Stormy weekend leaves floods and chaos behind

THE weather appears to be signing off a stormy weekend with a defiant V-sign in regular Observer contributor Alan Thomassen's Sunday afternoon shot.

Two days of constant batterings by wind and rain blew down hoardings and fences, threw shingle across the promenades, flooded Egerton Park and scattered fishing boats like toys.

A long section of the security fencing on the flats development building site at the junction of Sackville Road and Park Road was blown down.

Wind and waves blew a dog waste bin across the central promenade.

Bexhill escaped the worst of it at the weekend, but heavy weather conditions did cause a few problems for emergency services.

On Sunday morning, major flooding at Herbrand Walk brought traffic to a standstill and Sussex Police took the decision to close off the road. A car had been driven into floodwater and become stuck.

At 5am that morning, a Bexhill firecrew responded when the Christmas lights in Devonshire Road crashed down in high winds - they secured the lights and made them safe - and also went to Tresco House in Holliers Hill when a roof sheet was blown loose.
