Stroke challenge success for seafront charity walkers

WALKING any distance can be one of the biggest efforts for stroke victims, but on Sunday a group rose to the challenge to complete an 800 metre, or half-mile, walk along Bexhill seafront.

Members of the stroke rehabilitation classes run by Freedom Leisure’s centres in Bexhill and Hailsham, aged from 42 to 90 and with varying stages of impairment, took part in the event, together with supporters.

Chris Cooley, of Freedom Leisure, Bexhill, said: “On the day we raised £87 with a collection bucket, and overall the team hopes to bring in £1,500 for the Stroke Association through sponsors.”

The walkers and some patients in wheelchairs headed east from Richmond Road, along West Parade to the De La Warr Pavilion. Chris said: “The atmosphere was fantastic and everyone did as much as they could manage.

“I’d like to express our thanks to all concerned, and also to the De La Warr Pavilion for supplying tea and coffee, and Rother District Council for its support.”
