Headteacher Richard Evea said on Tuesday: "It was quite a nasty accident, but he's escaped without any broken bones, as far as I'm aware, and no internal injuries.

"But they are keeping him in hospital for another 24 hours."

Mr Evea said that the boy could not remember the accident and said there was another pupil with him at the time.

He added: "He should have been in school and was not, but I have not had a chance to talk to him about why he was not in lessons."

The Boundstone headteacher said that another pupil was involved in an accident on the A27 five or six weeks ago.

"There's a lot of support for a road bridge and I understand that they are beginning to construct one in August or September."

Mr Evea said the work would take about three or four months and the bridge would be open next year.
