Priory School’s Year 10 GCSE students started the campaign, calling for a share of the money Santon is giving to commercial businesses previously located in the Phoenix Estate following development of the site.

The petition, which had 736 signatures, was handed to Green Party District Councillor Jo Carter last week, one of the people at the forefront of the campaign to find a new home for the many youth groups displaced as a result of the development.

Jo Domin, teacher of GCSE Citizenship at Priory School, said: “The students strongly feel there is a dismal lack of such facilities in the Lewes area, which will be worsened by the closure of places such as Skatehouse and Starfish.

“The students have collected signatures for their petition in local schools as well as in Lewes High Street and have found the campaign to be very well supported locally. Cllr Carter has been campaigning for an improvement in youth facilities for some time and praised the students for the work they had done.

“She said they had given hundreds of young people a voice that the District Council was bound to listen to and take seriously.

“The students also provided Cllr Carter with a survey detailing the types of facilities students would like to see in Lewes.”
