CANTONESE was the dish of the day at Bexhill High School.

A guest chef from company 'Wok at Work' cooked a variety of food for about 100 pupils and staff in a change to the usual menu. The culinary delights on offer included spiced chicken, char soi pork, chilli corn cob, egg fried rice and broccoli with oyster sauce.

The firm prepare a variety of wok cooked food, including Chinese and Thai, but the school opted for the milder Cantonese to appeal to a wider audience.

The event was well publicised at the school, with information displayed on posters and sent out in emails. The aim of the day was to show that fresh ingredients and healthy options are fun and exciting.

Annette Fearne, the school's catering manager, said: "Many students tried everything on the menu. The comments included 'Can we have this every Friday?' and 'It was real great, I enjoyed it very much.'

"All the catering staff were involved. We tasted it and will try to incorporate it into our own cooking, but we don't want to do it too often or it loses its appeal."
