Students clock on to session about how to manage time

Smita Warren, a qualified actuary at RSA, kindly took time out to visit Collyer's and speak to students about time management tools, study skills and how to be generally more effective with '˜work time' to enable '˜guilt free play time'.

Collyer’s student Lauren Hillyard said: “It was a real eye opener to realise how much time I waste! I now have some practical tools to help me use my time more effectively.”

Fellow student Sharon Presicci added: “It was useful to focus on achieving the task (rather than allocating a set amount of time) when studying. The ‘Master List’ and tools to help you achieve goals will be really valuable to me.”

During the entertaining and informative session, students enjoyed a presentation, took part in group management tasks and also had the opportunity for a Q&A with Smita.

Collyer’s Lucy Hargreaves was thrilled: “It’s great to see our students engaging with professionals from local businesses, receiving pragmatic advice and usable tools and techniques, which they can apply to their studies then take with them into the workplace.”

Smita was also delighted with the session: “All of the Collyer’s students were attentive and enthusiastic. Everybody got stuck into the tasks and I could see them working on their ‘Master Lists’ even before the session had ended! It was great to have the opportunity to chat to some of them afterwards about their studies and career goals, and to offer them practical advice on achieving them”.

Student Lewis Etherington said: “I’ve learned to break long term goals down to short term tasks to achieve each day.”

Lucy Hargreaves added: “Smita is really charismatic and the session was extremely well planned. She was wonderful with our students and the feedback has been excellent. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the session.”

Senior Tutor Ian McAlister, who manages the ‘Progression Directorate’ at Collyer’s said: “Smita is a top actuary and we are so lucky to draw on her expertise. It certainly adds value to the hugely positive careers and progression programme offered here at Collyer’s. Massive thanks to Smita and our very own Lucy Hargreaves for making this brilliant event possible.”
