Amber Rudd spoke to pupils, parents and teachers at Claremont Senior School in Bodiam about her rise to becoming secretary of state for energy and climate change last week.

The politician began as a backbencher in 2010 then parliamentary private secretary to the chancellor of the exchequer, whip, and parliamentary undersecretary of state for climate change before her current role.

Ms Rudd explained what was involved in each of these roles for general interest, and particularly for students of politics.

Afterwards she answered questions from the audience on a wide range of issues, but most of which related to energy and climate change.

“I was delighted to meet with the students at Claremont, and subsequently with the Claremont Political Society,” she said.

“It was a real pleasure to engage with their questions and to advise them on the steps they need to take if they have ambitions to become a Member of Parliament.”
