STUDENTS of Hailsham Community College have donated the magnificent total of 803.61 to help provide the orphaned children of Kabubbu village in Uganda with their schooling, food and healthcare.

College students put aside their uniforms for a day and in exchange made a contribution to charity. Their chosen charity for the day was the Hailsham-based Quicken Trust and the school it has built.

The Trust began its 40,000 orphan school building fundraising work in July 2000. By August 2001 those funds had been generated and a six-acre plot of land purchased. School construction of the first phase, eight classrooms, began in November 2001.

The Kabubbu Community Primary School opened for the start of the Ugandan school year on February 4 with its first 60 children and officially opens on March 28.

Quicken Trust directors Geoff and Geraldine Booker were delighted with the special fund-raising event. 'This is yet another way that a growing number of schools within a thirty mile radius of Eastbourne and Hailsham are actively supporting the hope of education, food and healthcare for these destitute children in Uganda.

'We are grateful, on their behalf, to every Hailsham student who has taken an interest in helping these children who have nothing. Every penny that is given goes to improve the Ugandan orphans' lives. We can assure them we deduct nothing for administration or travel to Uganda.

'Many schools and colleges in Eastbourne, Hailsham and the surrounding area are now seeking ways to help the Ugandan orphans. With the addition of Global Citizenship to the curriculum this September the work of locally based Quicken Trust can bring a real appreciation of what this means to local school children and college students.

'We can help teachers in a very practical way through multi-media presentations, including displays of items used in everyday Ugandan life. We would be very pleased to hear from schools and colleges wanting to know more.'

The Quicken Trust has a total of 400 orphans to raise support for. It costs just 17 a month to give them education, food, healthcare and clothing.

If you want to know more about how you can sponsor an orphan, contact The Quicken Trust by phone or fax on (01323) 832361 or by mail at PO Box 113, Hailsham, BN27 4US.
