Students honoured at House of Lords

The teenagers from Chatsmore Catholic High School completed their Legacy 110 post-tour project following a government-funded tour of the battlefields and presented them at a reception at the House of Lords on Thursday.

The event recognised the contribution the students have made to creating an enduring legacy by impacting on people in their community.

Chatsmore was one of only six schools invited to showcase the most innovative Legacy 110 projects this year at the House of Lords.

Jillian Kay, director of local government, policy department of communities and local government, presented the students with their Legacy 110 award.

Alicia Dutton, 14, Abby Smith, 14, and Joe Angioni, 15, created a permanent memorial dedicated to the soldiers of the three Sussex battalions who fought at the Battle of Boar’s Head on June 30, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme.

The memorial was unveiled at a ceremony in June, rounding off months of work on a project inspired by their tour to the battlefield sites.

The memorial, the only one in Sussex commemorating this specific battle, consists of a 1.2m-high boulder inscribed with words of remembrance and a backdrop made up of a series of wooden posts, each with a unique piece of artwork designed by students from secondary and primary schools in Worthing.

The students said they felt immensely privileged to have been part of the Centenary Battlefield Tour Programme, enhanced by the opportunity to share our experiences with a diverse range of people through the Legacy 110 project.
