Students shown some of the benefits of university

The initiative at Felpham Community College has seen students from its Believe and Achieve group who have little or no higher education family history, team up with the University of Chichester to encourage them to consider this option in the future.

The group of Year 10 pupils from the Believe and Achieve cohort plus some of the school’s business studies students, visited the university’s Bognor Regis campus for a day of team activities. The day involved pupils working with final year degree students from the university to create events and business opportunities for the local area.

The aim was for students to design events which would involve the local community, visitors and businesses and ultimately help boost the economy in Bognor. At the end of the day Felpham’s students had to put forward their ideas to a panel which included their head teacher Mark Anstiss, as well as university course managers who were also invited to attend the presentation.

Mr Anstiss said: “It was a very successful day and the students gained a great deal.

“They showed creativity to arrive at their final group ideas and presentations. Thanks must go to the university and under-graduate students who hosted the day so successfully.”
