Students speed date ideas for their future careers

Students were given a quick glimpse of their future possibilities when they took part in a career speed dating session.

Groups of Year 9 youngsters at The Weald School, in Billingshurst, were given five minutes to quiz guests from a variety of professions during the event on Feburary 3.

More than 260 students were involved, meeting representatives from areas such as the Armed Forces, fundraising, manufacturing, airline pilot, media, community policing, engineering, catering, building and construction.

They asked questions about the qualifications and skills needed, different entry routes into each profession, working hours, income and training and development opportunities.

Careers manager Sarah Wilson said: "This event allows students the opportunity to meet many different business professionals, talk to people face to face and to find out about careers they may never have heard of.

"We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers who have given up their time to attend this event.

"Students' feedback is always incredibly positive."

STEM ambassador James Bleach, who was one of the volunteers, said: "Many years ago someone came to my school and talked about a job similar to that which I now do.

"Whilst I tried different things, I always remembered the school visit and it did ultimately influence my career path.

"There is always the possibility I am now doing the same for someone else!”
