Students spend an evening helping the next generation

Student teams gave up an evening to help pupils coming from schools outside the Horsham area to make informed choices at events held at Collyer’s and Central Sussex College’s Haywards Heath campus.

Collyer’s student Owain McLoughlin, who previously attended Oakmeeds, said: “Collyer’s has been brilliant for me and it’s great to be in a position to help the next generation come through!

“This was a fantastic opportunity to speak to pupils and parents to give them the full flavour of Collyer’s life from a student perspective.”

Gemma Lester, who previously attended the Priory School in Dorking, was keen to volunteer: “This was my opportunity to give something back!”

The Collyer’s students each share a passion to help the next generation to understand the road into further education at the leading sixth form college and are studying subjects right across the broad range of academic and vocational subjects and levels offered at Collyer’s.

Ex Tanbridge House pupil Callum Hopkins, who presented to parents at Collyer’s, said: “Collyer’s have backed me with incredible support throughout my time here and it was a privilege to talk to be able to parents about the opportunities I’ve had.”

Head of Sport Academy John Burroughs, who attended both events to promote the college’s new academies in basketball, hockey and netball, said: “The aim of the events is to help pupils begin the smooth transition from school to Collyer’s and make informed choices about their next steps.

“Many thanks to these Collyer’s students for taking time-out to help the next generation.”

Ian McAlister Senior Tutor at Collyer’s also attended both events. He said: “Our lovely students provided a warm and friendly introduction to the college and could speak personally about their experiences.”

Assistant Principal Melanie Russell said: “It just goes to show what caring students we have at Collyer’s! Thank-you to them all for helping - they really are incredible!
