Students tackle world problems at conference in Middle East

ELEVEN students from Buckswood School in Guestling have taken up the opportunity for a life-changing experience by participating in a Model United Nations conference in Dubai.

The conference, called DIAMUN, was held in March, and over 600 students from around the globe took part. The aim was to simulate the United Nations, with the students debating the real issues that face world leaders today, from the debt crisis to the scarcity of water to the uprising in Syria. In the end, resolutions were passed on all issues, after much exciting debate.

A spokesperson for the school said: “As well as learning a great deal about current affairs and international relations, the students developed the skills of formal debating and public speaking. DIAMUN was the first such conference that Buckswood students had attended, and they experienced a steep learning curve.

“All those who took part said what a worthwhile experience DIAMUN was, and how their eyes have been opened to international politics. The Buckswood students returned full of enthusiasm, and now hope to establish their own Model UN conference at Buckswood in the near future. Maybe they will be the global leaders of tomorrow.”
