Students to hold sleep-out to raise cash for homeless

Dozens of students will be facing a chilly night when they hold a sleep-out to raise money for a charity for the homeless.

More than 60 teenagers – along with 10 intrepid members of staff – will bed down in the courtyard at St Wilfrid’s School, Southgate, on Thursday (December 17).

All money raised will go to Crawley Open House.

The sleep-out was the idea of students Patrick Kerr, Erin Quinliven and Lucy O’Brien, who took part in the Big Sleep-Out in Queens Square in October.

While those involved in the event looked out for each other and built up a sense of camaraderie, Patrick, Erin and Lucy were quick to realise that was not the case for people living on the streets.

Lucy said: “We were lucky to have this support from each other but those who are homeless do not have this and they are often very lonely which gives them even more challenges to their already difficult life.

“It is important for us not to forget that.”

Each of the students taking part in Thursday’s sleep-out had to raise a minimum of £25.

To add a little incentive, headteacher Michael Ferry pledged to take part if the students raised £1,000.

If they raised £2,000 he promised to wear a onesie for the occasion – and if they reach the £3,000 milestone, he will wear the same onesie during the school’s Reward Assemblies on the last day of term.

Sarah Gildea, marketing & fundraising co-ordinator at St Wilfrid’s, thanked the students, staff and parents for their generosity in supporting the cause.
