A total of £20,000 has been budgeted by the council for a feasibility study to provide options and budget costs.

The council chamber has not been significantly upgraded since it was built in the 1960s, is not large enough to comfortably accommodate all councillors and space in the public gallery is limited. The audio and visual systems are dated, while the electrical and heating systems also need upgrading.

According to officers: “The council chamber is the heart of the council’s political and business activities, and professional design input is essential.”

A project team of staff and members is managing the feasibility study.

An officers’ report also explains that the chambers and surrounding areas including members’ accommodation does not comply with current accessibility standards.
