Styles that were a cut above in 1979

The 1970s are remembered rather fondly as '˜the decade that taste forgot' '“ and it is often a blessing that newspaper photos from back then tend to be black and white.

While the clothes may have strayed into the bizarre, most of the hairstyles were rather good – a plus point which would soon be wiped out in the 80s, the era of back-combing and far too much hair spray.

The young women in this photo were modelling styles created during an eliminating round of a competition organised by the Association of Hairdressing Teachers, at Chichester College of Technology.

Pictured from left are: Sharon Tennick, whose hair was styled by Mandy Weeks (not pictured). Next to her is Ralph Moni, with his model Jenny Fifield. Then there is Antoinette Schiavone who styled the hair of her sister Maria.

While Mandy and Antoinette’s styles would not raise an eyebrow on the streets of Chichester today, there was something more unusual – almost lampshade-like – about Ralph’s creation which makes you wonder if Jenny kept it.

Changing times lead to changing fashions.

Of the young hairdressers who took part in the competition, prizes went to first year students Valerie Strotten and Edward Maxted for their day styles. Second year students Debbie Hancock and Linda Tabor were among those who received prizes for their evening styles.

And Joan Leaman and Maria Ayres were the best of the over 21s.
