Pupils had to create a work in any form, such as a short story, poem or play, linked to the phrase ‘the view from here’.

Matthew Oliver, head of English at the school, said: “All the judges, and the English department, wish to commend all the writers for their truly superb writing. Every entrant showed huge potential and we will certainly be hearing about them, or reading them in print, very soon.”

Grace Stannard won the senior section with her account of a Tourette’s sufferer overcoming childhood trauma and Ellie Bostock-Smith won the junior class with her genre piece, ‘Rebecca Skylark’.

The winning and shortlisted entries will appear in the Bede’s Writers’ anthology to be published in June.
