An event to help towns and villages make the best of their resources and attract more people to shop locally has been branded a ‘great success’.

Wealden District Council held event Marketing Your Town last week which focused on regeneration initiatives and ideas to help rejuvenate towns and villages.

The workshop, which was delivered by Action for Market Towns and Hidden Britain, is part of the council’s Streets Ahead initiative.

The Streets Ahead project was designed to help local chambers, businesses, councillors, community groups and town teams make the most of available assets and opportunities to boost footfall within the high street and overall visitor numbers.

Topics covered at the workshop included identifying areas which make a community unique and how to use this as a selling point, the principles of destination marketing, the sharing of best practice and how best to work in partnership to improve the visibility of a community.

The event also discussed communication methods such as reaching people through social media.

Cllr Roy Galley, who is Wealden’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Regeneration, said: “The Marketing Your Town workshop was a great success – informative, well presented and thought provoking.

“It will really help the towns and villages within Wealden to make the most of their resources.”

The workshop was attended by representatives from town and parish councils, local town teams such as Hailsham Forward and chambers of commerce.

Presentations were followed by workshop sessions which were led by rural tourism and marketing expert Kevin Baughen, from Hidden Britain, together with Mike King, Town Alive’s Senior Research and Town Centres Consultant. Town’s Alive is a programme to sustain and revitalise market towns.
