Successful test for Robertsbridge flood defences

THE Environment Agency recently ran a successful test of the Robertsbridge Flood Alleviation Scheme.

The scheme is made up of over 1100m of defences, including five demountable barriers and two flood gates which all have to be shut to prevent flooding to more than 100 homes and businesses in the village.

Last week field teams carried out a test deployment in front of members of the public, police and parish and district councillors, to ensure the scheme is in good working order.

Full deployment of all of the demountable defences is a complex operation and it is tested at least once a year, providing a good training exercise for Environment Agency teams.

Mark Douch, Environment Agency flood and coastal risk manager said: “The Robertsbridge Flood Alleviation Scheme is a significant local asset, improving the flood protection for over 100 local homes and businesses. Schemes like this help prevent flooding, but nothing stops it happening. I’d encourage people to be prepared for flooding and check out their flood risk on the Environment Agency website at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood.”
