More than 900 visitors flocked to Uckfield Fire Station for Wealden District Council’s Fun and Safety Day held on April 8.

Organisers said children, parents and carers were entertained by numerous activities.

The free event is a mix of fun and learning through interactive displays with youngsters also able to get the chance to sit in a fire engine or a police car.

A children’s entertainer provided a puppet show and music while some children had their faces painted.

Craft activities were also available alongside games and balloon modelling.

The town’s firefighters carried out three demonstrations during the event while Fireman Sam and Welephant rescued a ‘damsel in distress’ from a lounge fire.

The Heavy Animal Rescue Unit from Crowborough made a guest appearance to display their equipment and skills while Sussex Police showed visitors around their vehicle and offered safety advice.

Staff, parents and helpers from Stepping Stones Pre-school in Maresfield ran a cake stall and ‘guess the sheep’s name’ competition raising £570 to kick start their work on building a sensory garden.

A further £300 was raised for the Firefighters Charity from sales from the charity’s shop, donations and the firefighters ‘human fruit machine.’

Staff from Uckfield Fire Station said the event was ‘hugely successful’ and they wanted to thank those who supported it.

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service added: “Special thanks go to the project partners and supporters including Sussex Police, Freedom Leisure, Active Play and especially to Wealden Children Centres for their incredible organisational skills plus Radiation Arts and to Waitrose - who supplied fresh fruit to promote healthy eating.”
