Three Oaks and Winchelsea Action for Rail Transport (THWART) and others have worked with Southern to have Sunday train services resumed.

Sussex Community Rail Partnership (Sussex CRP), the Marshlink Action Group, Railfuture and Amber Rudd MP were involved in getting the all-week services.

THWART co-chairmen John Spencer and Monika Betson said this will allow tourists to come to Winchelsea and provide a form of public transport for Three Oaks.

The chairmen said this is vital for the areas’ futures but they also hope the community will support these two stations and the Marshlink Line.

The pair said they are very grateful for all the support we have received from so many organisations including Southern over the last ten years.

A Southern Rail spokesman said: “We know from working with local groups and the community rail partnership for the Marshlink line, that there has been a long-held aspiration to see a Sunday train service at Winchelsea and Three Oaks.

“We’re delighted that December’s major change to the timetable has finally given us the opportunity to do just this – something which had not been operationally possible before.”

THWART has organised a celebratory event to prove to Southern the stations will be used at Winchelsea station at 11.20am on Sunday, December 13.

The group will be greeting the 11.37am train to Rye and Ashford and the 11.45am to Hastings, which will be carrying some supporters.

There may also be some tickets for free rail travel available courtesy of Sussex CRP.
