Sunniest, driest December

December was the sunniest and driest end to a year in Bognor Regis since 2001.

The sunshine total of 100.2 hours was half as much again as the expected 62.3 hours. The month's final seven days accounted for just over a third of that overall amount of blue sky.

The sunniest days were the 6th and 7th with 7.2 hours each under cloudless conditions.

All this sun meant that rain during last month was in short supply. Less than half the seasonal average fell at 35mm against an expected 75.54mm.

Almost half of that meagre amount came in one soaking day '“ 17.2mm on the 13th.

The temperature was also lower than average. Night time conditions dropped to -5.7C on the 12th to produce a mean minimum temperature of 3C compared to the seasonal average of 4.2C.

Daytimes saw the thermometer soar to 12.5C on the 22nd but this was not enough to push the 8.2C mean maximum temperature above the 8.7C.
