Super Simon completes epic endurance challenge

Miserable conditions could not stand in the way of ‘Superman’ Simon Allchin completing one last ten mile run – his 31st in 31 consecutive days.

Dressed as the iconic red and blue superhero for the duration of his challenge, Simon was cheered across the line by his 11-year-old daughter Ella, partner Vanessa, 45, and friends at Littlehampton’s lighthouse.

Simon, 44, of Hide Gardens, said: “There’s been nights where I’ve almost been in tears before I’ve left the house it’s hurt that much. On those runs I’ve bumped into someone or people have beeped and waved – there’s always been something to keep me going. The support from everyone in the town has been incredible. People in Angmering, East Preston and all the areas I’ve been running have been brilliant.”

Blisters were the worst thing about the challenge, according to Simon. He also lost a toe nail and has seen his costume fall to pieces.

“There’s holes in the socks and one of the pairs of shorts is falling apart. They are in just as bad a state as I am,” he said.

The fundraising effort was in support of The Body Shop Foundation’s Build India initiative. In October a 30-strong team made up of members from across the globe will travel to India to build a rehabilitation centre for disabled children.

Simon works at the company’s headquarters in Watersmead Park, Littlehampton, and said he is relishing the trip to India.

He said: “I’m looking forward to the second half of the challenge in October. That will be eight-hour days in the Indian heat working on a building site.”

It is estimated that around 100 children will use the centre which will include physiotherapy, solar powered hydrotherapy and speech therapy facilities as well as a kitchen, dining hall and outdoor play equipment.

Simon’s partner Vanessa said: “I think it’s just amazing. When he first mentioned it I thought he was completely mad but he kept with it. He’s astounded me really. He’s kept going through the pain, the aching muscles, the tiredness and the wet and cold. We are as proud as punch.”
