It returned to Newhaven overnight on Friday and made a crossing to Dieppe on Saturday for berthing trials.

The Superseacat One mono-hull ferry replaces the Seacat Diamant catamaran which sailed on the cross-Channel route last season.

Newhaven Hoverspeed route manager Nick Stevens said travellers had not been discouraged by the false start.

'Despite the delay people are voting with their feet,' he said.
