Supermarket snub ‘appals’ Littlehampton fundraiser

Jonathan, of Fleet Close, Littlehampton, wanted to buy 144 finger rolls and burger buns from the ASDA store at Ferring on Saturday (July 19), but a bakery worker said he couldn’t have so many and took them out of his trolley.

Disgusted by his treatment, father-of-two Jonathan drove to Sainsbury’s at Rustington, where staff offered to bake him fresh rolls on Sunday morning for his barbecue that afternoon.

Describing ASDA’s action as ‘appalling’, the 31-year-old self-employed plasterer said: “The rolls and buns were on offer, but there was nothing to say you had to pre-order them. An assistant said it was ok and started packing the rolls and buns into bags for me, but then a woman from the bakery said I couldn’t have them and she took them out.”

Jonathan spent almost £400 of his own money on food and drink for the event, which was in aid of Cancer Research and in memory of his best friend, Nick Suter, who died from cancer five days before Christmas, 2013.

The barbecue, on an open space near Jonathan’s home, was attended by family, friends and neighbours and raised £520.

An ASDA spokeswoman said: “We are committed to working within the community and answer hundreds of requests to support charitable causes every week. As with any charity we’re happy to place an order for larger amounts of product so our regular customers are still able to buy what they need on a daily basis.”
