Support for Conquest staff

ACTIVE Hastings is having a positive impact on staff at the Conquest Hospital.

At the beginning of the year, the council-run organisation carried out a pilot project to introduce exercise into the daily lives of hospital staff.

Overall the programme went well, despite the weather which hampered lunchtime football sessions.

Emile Tambeh, Active Hastings assistant co-ordinator, said: "We hope to come back to the Conquest over the summer to repeat some of the more popular classes, in particular pilates and dance, with a view to introducing staff to more permanent sessions held in the area.

"We are also keen to involve staff in a football league with other local businesses."

Staff can borrow a pedometer from Occupational Health to use for a lunchtime stroll, in order to pace out their route if desired.

Active Hastings also intend to work with the cycling and walking group within the Trust to enhance initiatives to encourage staff to use more healthy means of transport to and from work.

The ward pedometer challenge was taken up by 12 wards, involving around 120 staff. The hard 'walking' staff of Cookson Devas won the shield, which takes pride of place on the ward.

Active Hastings continue to run a variety of sports and activities over the summer and coming year. To find out more, check out their website: www.activeinhastings.org.uk
