Support for tourism

COUNCILLORS from Rother District Council showed their support for the second annual English Tourism Week (March 16-24) with a visit to various attractions across the area.

The event celebrates the contribution of the tourism industry, in all its forms, to our local and national economies, to wealth creation, regional regeneration and job creation.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is patron for the series of inter-related events, which aims to raise local, regional, national and international awareness of the size, value and importance of Britain’s £115 billion visitor economy.

Councillors across the UK were invited to visit tourism businesses in their area and Councillors Kevin Dixon, Sue Prochak, Stuart Wood and Kathryn Field took up the offer to visit local tourism venues.

Visits were made to the Kent and East Sussex Railway at Bodiam, Northiam’s Mill Toy and Pedal Car Museum, Great Dixter at Northiam, Bodiam Castle, Crowhurst Park and Battle Museum.

Tourism is Britain’s fifth biggest industry and our third largest export earner.

Tourism in Rother supports 17 per cent of jobs (including self-employed) – 6,391 actual jobs, and is worth £271,973,000 a year to the local economy.
