Supporters celebrate Row4Charity victory

Around 150 Row4Charity supporters gathered at the Waterfront on Friday night to cheer home the Bexhill Trust Challenger on the other side of the world.

A phone link-up meant that shore manager Geoff Dixon was in contact with the crew as they rowed the last final strokes towards victory.

He was able to speak to Phil McCorry in the boat as brother Nick at the same time linked up with parents Steve and Sue waiting in Mauritius with family and friends.

Together they all counted down the last dramatic moments as the boat came in.

Geoff said: "I was speaking to Phil on the phone and held a microphone to it so everybody could hear. You should have heard it at the end, the cheer that went up - it was very emotional. Lots of people were in tears."

Afterwards he told the Observer: "Its been a long six months and I have to say the boys surpassed all hopes and expectations.

"I personally am extremely proud of these four men and I know its an old adage, but it's been great working with them.

"Chris Wynn, the Stroke Association's Regional Fundraising Director, travelled from Wiltshire to attend and was in tears as they won.

"I know I keep saying thanks to everyone, but I hope that everyone who has contributed, no mater how small, felt some pride from the boys success.

"The messages left on the Woodvale website from Bexhill residents throughout the event were tremendous, extremely supportive as well as very sporting to the other boats competing.

"It will be great to see all the boys back in town again and I would like to congratulate Matt and Emma on their engagement.

"Please remember that we will still be fundraising for the Stoke Association with many events planned culminating with a traditional family day at the dlwp on August Bank Holiday Sunday. You can still donate online at www.r4charity.co.uk or by cheque or in person at the Waterfront Club."

Chris Wynn commented: "These four young men have been such an inspiration to me. Aside from all the training they put in for the race, they have fundraised tirelessly for us throughout this time.

"Rarely have I had the privilege to work with such determined, generous and hardworking young people. We are all so proud of their achievements."
