Surgeon joins zany run to help fund new equipment

Paul is chief of surgery for Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust and a consultant urological surgeon known for his cool demeanour.

He is taking part in the 26-mile Medoc Marathon, a fundraising scheme supported by West Sussex Urology LLP to raise money towards new equipment for diagnosing prostate cancer.

Known as the world’s zaniest marathon, the event on September 12 involves running from vineyard to vineyard in Bordeaux in an outlandish costume.

Mr Carter said: “The prostate template biopsy equipment will have a huge impact on the lives of the men we see in clinic. The whole process will be much quicker and better for the patient.

“Everyone donating to Ten Pounds for Templates will be making a real difference to men’s health and we’re hoping we can raise enough to be able to provide the diagnostic procedure at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, rather than patients having to travel outside the area.”

The template biopsy equipment, costing almost £60,000, enables urologists to investigate the whole prostate gland.

Janet Francis, business manager at West Sussex Urology LLP, said: “We have had really good backing so far from the community and patients, including a cheque for £10,000 from the Chichester Masonic Lodge of Union no.38, a donation of £500 from Adur East Lions Club and the Nuffield Hospital holding a bake sale.”
