Surprise honour for Dove Lodge volunteer

DEDICATED and determined were among the descriptions of a Rustington woman who has given a quarter of a century of voluntary service to the Littlehampton area.

Gina Watson, of Goodwood Close, who was made an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list, was honoured by the Littlehampton community groups’ base Dove Lodge for her vital volunteer work.

About 20 people attended a reception at the centre, in Beach Road, when Dove Lodge trustees surprised Gina by naming a room after her.

Caring Gina, 55, said: “This is such an overwhelming honour.

“I never expected anything like this at all.”

MP Sir Peter Bottomley said: “Gina is a truly wonderful individual.

“She gives volunteer services a good name.

“She makes everyone proud by her steadfast commitment to helping others and is much-loved for it. Congratulations.”

Gina, who suffers from a debilitating lung condition, has been working with the centre for more than 10 years and is currently a trustee and member of the board of directors.

Over the years, she has also volunteered with West Sussex County Council social services department and Arun Care.

Gina was also one of the first drivers to enlist when the Arun Co-ordinated Community Transport group, at The Dairy Community Centre, in Church Street, was formed.

She said: “I have always done volunteer work,

“But my health deteriorated and so I was not able to do paid work.

“Volunteering fulfilled a need within me. I just wanted to help others who were in a difficult position.

“It’s such a rewarding and fulfilling job. I really enjoy it.”
