Sussex Community NHS Trust is being supported by the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) to get the new status – which means the organisation has more freedom to decide how it is run and can appoint governors to improve its accountability.

The foundation trust status mean the SCT would be monitored by the independent regulator for NHS foundation trusts, Monitor.

Paula Head, chief executive of SCT said: “I see a passion for continuous quality improvement day in day out across the trust. It’s this commitment on the part of our nurses, therapists, doctors, dentists and support staff that will drive us as we move into this exciting yet exacting phase in our FT development.

“Our teams can take pride in the progress we’ve made in such a short period of time and we all look forward with keen anticipation to this new phase of our future.”

The trust will now apply to Monitor which will review its ability to operate as an foundation trust.
