A team of Sussex Police officers and staff members are now 11 days into their pledge to run, jog or walk at least two miles a day for the next 100 days in memory of a murdered colleague.

The pledge, which started on February 20, is in support of ‘Run to Remember’, a national event run by the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial fund - a registered charity which was set up in memory of PC Hughes, who was murdered alongside her colleague PC Fiona Bone, on 12 September 2012 in Greater Manchester.

Team Sussex first took part in the event, alongside colleagues from across the UK, in 2013/14 and raised more than £4,000 in donations - they hope to beat this record this year.

Tracy Hall, from the force’s human resources department, who has helped arrange this year’s team, said: “Sussex Police successfully participated in Run to Remember a couple of years ago, and those that took part in the challenge all enjoyed the experience.

“This year our committed team of runners include new members and those who were on the team before. Everyone has their reasons for participating; whether it be the personal challenge of running on a regular basis, keeping fit, or the seasoned runner who wants to raise a bit of cash for charity. However, we all have the same goal to raise funds to help children who have lost close family members through tragic circumstances.

“For me it’s not only the personal challenge of running, but as a parent myself, it’s about ensuring that all children are given the opportunity to be the best they can be and by fund-raising for this charity it allows children to learn and develop in order to achieve their potential.”

Team member Detective Inspector Jacqui Jenkins, said: “As deputy chair of Evolve - Sussex Police’s professional support network working to improve equality and supporting women working for the force - it seemed fitting that my first running challenge should be to help raise money in memory of a woman officer who paid the ultimate price serving her community and who even now continues to make a difference to the lives of others.

“I feel hugely privileged to be running for those that can no longer and in doing so have the opportunity not only to improve my fitness but also to raise money with colleagues for such an important cause.”

Bryn Hughes, Nicola’s father, set up the charity to provide learning opportunities and pre-employment skills in the form of support through grants or services to children (under 21) who have suffered a tragic loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.
