Sussex Police officer arrested over ‘inappropriate payments’

A SUSSEX Police officer has been arrested as part of an investigation into inappropriate payments by journalists to police officers.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police arrested the 29-year-old officer at his home in Sussex at around 6am on Tuesday.

He was suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt, contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 and the Criminal Law Act 1977, conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public Office, contrary to Common Law and the Criminal Law Act 1977 and misconduct in a public office, contrary to Common Law.

The serving officer with Sussex Police was taken into custody at a south London police station.

Meanwhile a 37-year-old male journalist was arrested in a simultaneous raid at his home in north London.

He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to corrupt, contrary to the Prevention of Corruption Act 1906 and the Criminal Law Act 1977 and conspiracy to cause misconduct in a public office, contrary to Common Law and the Criminal Law Act 1977.

He was taken into custody at a north London police station.

Neither the police officer or the journalist have been named and it is not known whereabouts in Sussex the officer is based.

The duo have been arrested as part of Operation Elveden.

Operation Elveden is the investigation into allegations of inappropriate payments to police and public officials.

It is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission and is running in conjunction with Operation Weeting, the Metropolitan Police inquiry into the phone-hacking of voicemail boxes.

The new arrests bring the total number of people arrested as part of Operation Elveden to 43.
