Sustainability a hot topic for Arun youth councillors

THE future of sustainability was the hot topic for Arun youth councillors.

Young delegates from Littlehampton and Angmering gathered with others from Bognor and Felpham to take part in this year’s Arun Youth conference.

The event was held at the Bognor Regis campus of the University of Chichester.

In total, 42 students aged 11-19 from The Littlehampton Academy, The Angmering School, The Regis School and Felpham Community College attended.

The young people were split into groups of seven and spent 20 minutes at each of the six workshops, which focused on sustainability issues like transport, biodiversity, water and energy, health and well-being among others.

They then later prepared a five-minute presentation on a particular sustainability issue to demonstrate what they had learned.

Delegates finished by making pledges concerning something they would like to do in relation to sustainability.

Arun District Council’s chairman, Terence Chapman, said: “The students were really engaged with the topics and enthusiastically exploring the issues of sustainability for the future. This is a fantastic event as it not only gives the young councillors the chance to meet students from other schools, but is a chance for them to have their voices heard and opinions respected.”
