Swan Walk turned 40 this year and to mark the occasion the centre hosted a huge party on Saturday (September 12) and everyone from the town was invited.

The celebrations included a variety of fun family activities as well as special guests and exciting prize giveaways.

Popular 70s television and comicstrip character Garfield was on hand to entertain visitors and guests were also given the opportunity to make their mark on the centre’s giant 40th birthday card.

The card went on display after the event along with the anniversary mosaic designed by children from schools across the district earlier in the year.

Gobsmack Comics’ pop up shop also joined in with the celebrations with the store offering face painting, live demonstrations by comicbook artists and even a chance to meet Judge Dredd and Batman.

Swan Walk centre manager Gill Buchanan said she really enjoyed the celebrations.

She said: “Shopping centres, like town centres, evolve over time to satisfy the wants and needs of their customers and over the last 40 years Swan Walk has certainly changed significantly in so many ways.

“But we have always stayed true to our loyal customers so giving them an opportunity to celebrate with us and to have the opportunity to win vouchers to spend in the centre has been great. Who knows what the next 40 years will hold.”

Every shopper spending over £40 in a Swan Walk retailer on the day had the opportunity to enter a prize drawer with hundreds of pounds worth of vouchers up for grabs.

Simon Wells took home a £100 M&S voucher and said he was off to stock up on some new school trousers for his children.

Mrs Penn also won a £50 Boots voucher and said she was going to treat herself to some luxury smellies and pampering.
